Aon
Full Credential Description
In Minnesota, firefighters face significant health risks, particularly due to their exposure to cancer, cardiac issues, and emotional trauma. Aon partnered with MnFIRE, a non-profit organization co-founded by George Esbensen, to address these challenges, especially for the state's predominantly volunteer firefighter workforce, which lacks access to health benefits. The partnership aimed to create a comprehensive health benefits program tailored to the unique needs of approximately 20,000 firefighters in Minnesota. The collaboration led to the enactment of the Hometown Heroes Act, which established the Hometown Heroes Assistance Program. This program provides critical illness coverage to help offset the costs associated with the health risks firefighters face. Additionally, MnFIRE operates a support hotline staffed by trauma-trained professionals, offering assistance to firefighters in need. Training initiatives have also been implemented to raise awareness about the heightened risks and provide strategies for mitigation. Since its launch in 2021, the Hometown Heroes Assistance Program has trained over 17,500 firefighters across Minnesota. The program has seen more than 700 firefighters utilize the assistance hotline, and over 150 critical illness claims have been paid out. This initiative not only addresses immediate health concerns but also aims to replicate its success in other states, enhancing the overall well-being of firefighters and their families.
