Full Credential Description

Wipro Limited faced significant challenges related to its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly in its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, which were primarily driven by diesel-generated electricity and purchased grid electricity. To address these issues, Wipro implemented a series of tailored solutions aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. Notably, the company shifted away from diesel power in Chennai, which contributed to a remarkable 68% reduction in Scope 1 emissions since 2015. Additionally, Wipro transitioned from leased to owned facilities, consolidating office space and further decreasing its emissions.

In terms of Scope 2 emissions, Wipro achieved a 54% reduction since 2015 through various energy efficiency improvements, including server rationalization, motor and drive replacements, and retrofitting air conditioning systems. The company also increased its renewable energy procurement through power purchase agreements (PPAs) by 40% during the same period. As a result of these initiatives, Wipro successfully met 28% of its science-based targets for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.

To tackle Scope 3 emissions, which primarily stemmed from business travel and employee commuting, Wipro enhanced public transport access for employees and introduced a carpooling mobile app, leading to a cumulative saving of over 2,100 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Furthermore, the company developed processes to facilitate remote work, resulting in a 21% reduction in air travel emissions between 2018 and 2019. Wipro also adopted the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) for IT hardware procurement, which contributed to a further reduction of 600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2019.

Wipro has set ambitious targets to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 14% by 2022 and 48% by 2030, using 2017 as the base year. Additionally, it aims to reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions by 10% by 2022 and 30% by 2030. By aligning its emissions reduction strategies with the latest climate science and the Paris Agreement goals, Wipro has positioned itself as a leader in corporate sustainability within the IT and consulting industry.
