Eneco Sustainability
Full Credential Description
Eneco Group, a leading energy company in the Netherlands, faced the challenge of aligning its operations with climate science amidst increasing global temperatures and the urgent need for carbon reduction. In response, Eneco set an ambitious science-based target to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. This target was approved by the Science Based Targets initiative, marking Eneco as the first Dutch company to achieve this recognition.
To address its emissions, Eneco developed the One Planet Plan, which not only sets clear reduction goals but also encourages collaboration with suppliers and clients to operate sustainably. Specifically, Eneco committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions per gigawatt-hour (GWh) from electricity consumed by its customers by 25% by 2020, based on a 2012 baseline. Additionally, it aimed for a 16% reduction in emissions per household from natural gas and district heating for private customers and a 50% reduction in emissions per GWh used for employee operations, all by 2020.
The results of these initiatives have been substantial. Eneco has already made significant investments in sustainable energy, including the development of offshore and onshore wind parks, which have contributed to a marked decrease in emissions from its operations and energy sales. The implementation of innovative solutions, such as the smart Toon thermostat, has also facilitated energy savings for clients. These efforts not only align with global climate goals but have also enhanced Eneco's competitive advantage, leading to increased innovation, reduced regulatory uncertainty, strengthened investor confidence, and improved profitability.
