Ørsted has embarked on a significant decarbonization journey, addressing the critical issue of high emissions within the energy sector, which accounts for 73% of global emissions. The company has set ambitious targets, aiming for at least a 98% reduction in emissions intensity in scope 1 and 2 by 2025, compared to 2006 levels. Recognizing the need to extend its efforts beyond direct emissions, Ørsted has initiated a supply chain decarbonization program. This program focuses on collaborating with strategic suppliers to enhance climate disclosures, establish science-based targets, and ensure the use of 100% green electricity in their manufacturing processes.

In a pivotal move, Ørsted transitioned its previously set net-zero target for 2040 to a science-based framework, which includes specific long-term reduction goals. These goals encompass a 99% reduction in emissions across its entire energy portfolio in scopes 1-3, compared to 2018, and a 90% reduction in absolute scope 3 emissions from the use of products sold, including its natural gas portfolio. By 2040, Ørsted plans to neutralize any remaining limited emissions through high-quality, certified carbon removal projects. This comprehensive approach underscores the urgency for energy companies to take rapid action and achieve deep emission cuts to contribute to a sustainable future.
