Full Credential Description

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is collaborating with Mott MacDonald to advance the Oil and Gas Sector Project, which focuses on developing science-based target-setting methodologies specifically for oil and gas companies. This initiative addresses the critical need for these companies to align their emissions reduction targets with the transformative goals outlined in the Paris Agreement.

The project has established a technical working group, produced draft guidance, and initiated a public consultation to gather insights and feedback. The recently released Oil and Gas Interim Report, crafted by Mott MacDonald in close collaboration with the SBTi, contextualizes the urgent need to reduce emissions from the oil and gas sector. It outlines the results of the public consultation, identifies remaining challenges, and sets forth the next steps toward finalizing the target-setting methodology and guidance.

Mott MacDonald will also form and lead an expert advisory group that includes industry representatives, scientific experts, NGO leaders, and academics. This group aims to address the specific technical and methodological challenges highlighted in the Interim Report while ensuring a strategic approach to the SBTi's guidance for the oil and gas sector. Following the expert review, the SBTi will determine the necessary actions to further develop the guidance, which may involve additional public consultations or further analysis of unresolved issues. In the interim, the SBTi encourages oil and gas companies to take immediate action to reduce emissions across their operations and value chains.
