Full Credential Description

Tech Mahindra faced significant challenges in reducing its carbon footprint while expanding its infrastructure. The company needed to address both existing emissions from its original infrastructure and new sources of emissions as it grew. To tackle these issues, Tech Mahindra implemented a comprehensive set of sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.

One of the tailored solutions included the purchase of energy-efficient laptops and servers, the installation of natural cooling systems for data centers, and the use of advanced air conditioning equipment. Additionally, motion sensors and low carbon lighting were installed across all major campuses and new buildings. These measures collectively resulted in a 12% reduction in total Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions between 2018 and 2019, which also contributed to lower operational costs.

Renewable energy generation was another critical component of Tech Mahindra's sustainability roadmap. The company installed solar panels at seven facilities, with a total capacity exceeding 3,400 kWp, generating over 4,430 MWh of energy in 2018. This initiative led to a reduction of more than 3,700 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Furthermore, Tech Mahindra consumed over 18,500 MWh of solar power through power purchase agreements, significantly increasing its renewable energy consumption since 2016.

To address Scope 3 emissions, primarily from employee business travel, Tech Mahindra invested in remote communication infrastructure, such as teleconferencing and Webex, and provided shared transport facilities. This strategy resulted in a 32% reduction in emissions from business travel. Overall, in the 2018-2019 period, Tech Mahindra achieved total emissions reductions of over 19,500 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

The implementation of science-based targets not only facilitated these emissions reductions but also led to tangible business benefits, including lower costs from energy savings and reduced grid electricity expenses. Tech Mahindra is committed to further reducing its absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 22% by 2030 and 50% by 2050, using 2016 as the base year.
