The European Investment
Full Credential Description
The European Investment Fund (EIF) invested in Carduso Capital Groningen, establishing a total fund volume of EUR 31 million aimed at fostering innovation in the Northern Region of the Netherlands. This initiative specifically targets seed and early-stage companies within the Life Sciences sector, particularly focusing on healthy ageing, as well as energy and sustainable society sectors. The collaboration involves the University of Groningen and the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG), which are integral to the fund's operations.
The EIF's involvement is expected to significantly enhance the economic climate for entrepreneurs and start-ups in the region. Jan de Jeu, Vice Chairman of the Executive Board of the University of Groningen, emphasized that the partnership would combine innovative ideas with necessary financial resources, thereby creating a conducive environment for start-ups to thrive. Patrick Brouns, Deputy of the Province of Groningen, noted that this investment could lead to increased local employability and the development of commercially viable products, processes, or services, ultimately driving new economic activities in the area.
Piyush Unalkat, EIF Head of Technology Transfer, highlighted that this partnership addresses a critical market gap in investment stages, providing essential support for start-ups and spin-outs to grow and innovate. The fund is positioned as a cornerstone investor, capable of attracting additional investments to capitalize on the innovation opportunities present in the Groningen region. This strategic investment by the EIF not only aims to support local economic development but also aligns with its broader mission to assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Europe in accessing finance.
