Sophiagård Elmehøjen, a social enterprise located in Ølsted, Denmark, faced the challenge of providing a meaningful and supportive environment for its 24 residents, all of whom have intellectual disabilities. The organization aimed to create a working community that not only offered a home but also fostered a sense of purpose and identity among its residents. The head mistress, Anja Grage, emphasized the importance of helping residents find their roles in society through various workshops, including herb processing, candle-making, and farm work. This approach not only enhanced their confidence but also instilled a sense of belonging and pride in their contributions.

To address the growing need for additional housing and facilities, Sophiagård Elmehøjen sought financial support. In 2019, they secured an EU-guaranteed loan from Merkur, backed by the European Investment Fund (EIF), which enabled them to purchase and renovate a house across the street. This new facility allowed for the accommodation of three more residents and included ample farmland for agricultural activities. Anja expressed aspirations to develop a multi-purpose space for community events, which had been a long-held dream for the organization.

The tailored solution provided by the EIF through the EaSI Guarantee Financial Instrument not only facilitated the expansion of Sophiagård Elmehøjen's capacity but also reinforced its mission to support individuals with intellectual disabilities in leading fulfilling lives. The initiative has had a profound impact on the residents, allowing them to engage in meaningful work and community activities, thereby enhancing their overall quality of life.
