Full Credential Description

An international law firm faced a significant challenge when tasked with managing approximately 1,000GB of email data and electronically stored files for a client involved in a legal dispute in a foreign jurisdiction. The firm was under pressure to complete the initial investigation phase within a tight three-week deadline and was uncertain about how to efficiently process such a large volume of data.

To address this issue, we’s Forensic Technology team implemented Continuous Active Learning (CAL) to streamline the document review process. Initially, the team collected and processed nearly three million documents for review using the law firm’s document review platform, Relativity. Anticipating that only about 10 percent of these documents would be relevant based on keyword searches, the team estimated a review set of approximately 300,000 documents. However, recognizing the impracticality of using a team of 10 reviewers who would require over two months to complete the review, we introduced CAL. This innovative technology prioritizes documents for review based on reviewer input, allowing the team to focus on the most relevant documents first.

Through effective training on CAL, the dataset was dramatically reduced from three million documents to just 25,000. A subsequent quality control review revealed an impressively low overturn rate, with only 0.2 percent of documents initially classified as not relevant later found to be relevant. As a result of these efforts, the law firm completed the initial review in under a week, achieving an estimated savings of £1.25 million in potential review costs. Ultimately, the firm disclosed around 1,000 documents to the opposing solicitor, leading to we being recognized as a preferred supplier for eDiscovery services by the law firm.
