Full Credential Description
Karibou, a packaging company based in Sant Cugat, Catalunya, faced significant challenges in the sustainable packaging sector, particularly the need to replace single-use plastics with biodegradable alternatives. Founded by Xavier Pinosa, who has roots in the plastics industry, the company aimed to produce sustainable packaging solutions such as cups, containers, and cutlery using renewable energy and non-toxic materials. The company sought to scale its operations to meet the growing demand for sustainable products, especially as regulations increasingly push for alternatives to plastic.
To address these challenges, Karibou secured an EU-guaranteed loan through Santander, backed by the European Investment Fund (EIF) under the InvestEU programme. This financial support was crucial for increasing production capacity and enhancing research and development efforts. The goal was to become the first company to produce paper cups without plastic lamination, which required financial partners who understood the scale-up efforts necessary for the business.
As a result of this tailored solution, Karibou has been able to significantly reduce CO2 emissions with every kilogram of product produced. The company has also positioned itself to meet the rising societal and regulatory demands for sustainable packaging solutions, thereby enhancing its market presence and impact. With a workforce of 90 employees, Karibou continues to innovate and improve its processes, striving for uncompromised sustainability in its operations.
