An international law firm faced a significant challenge when tasked with managing approximately 1,000GB of email data and electronically stored files for a client involved in a legal dispute in a foreign jurisdiction. The firm was under pressure to complete the initial investigation phase within a tight three-week deadline and was uncertain about how to efficiently process such a large volume of data.
To address this issue, we’s Forensic Technology team implemented Continuous Active Learning (CAL) to streamline the document review process. Initially, the team collected and processed nearly three million documents for review using the law firm’s document review platform, Relativity. Based on their experience, they anticipated that only about 10 percent of these documents would be relevant, leading to an estimated review set of around 300,000 documents. The law firm had considered deploying a team of 10 reviewers, but even this approach would have required over two months to complete the review.
By introducing CAL, the team was able to significantly enhance the efficiency of the review process. CAL prioritizes documents based on reviewer input, allowing the most likely relevant documents to be reviewed first. After training the client on this new technology, the dataset was reduced from three million documents to just 25,000. A subsequent quality control review revealed a remarkably low overturn rate, with only 0.2 percent of documents initially classified as not relevant later found to be relevant.
As a result of these efforts, the law firm completed the initial review in under a week, achieving an estimated savings of £1.25 million in potential review costs. They ultimately disclosed around 1,000 documents to the opposing solicitor. This successful outcome led to we’s forensic technology team being designated as a preferred supplier for eDiscovery services by the law firm.
