GRIN, an innovative start-up based in Italy, faced the challenge of promoting urban gardening among city dwellers who often lack the space and resources for traditional gardening. Founded by Salvatore Martorina, a young entrepreneur with a background in biology, GRIN aimed to transform balconies and rooftops into green spaces where individuals could grow their own fruits and vegetables. The company’s mission centered on achieving self-sustainability and fostering a harmonious relationship between urban living and ecological awareness.

To address these niche issues, GRIN developed a range of eco-friendly gardening products, including custom-made flower arrangements, ornamental plants, and biodegradable office supplies. The company also created an online platform for sales, complemented by a network of physical resellers. In 2014, GRIN received a crucial start-up loan from the European Investment Fund’s financial intermediary, Confeserfidi, which was partially funded by JEREMIE Sicily ESF resources. This financial support enabled Salvatore to acquire the necessary raw materials and services to establish the company, particularly for developing the IT platform that facilitated online orders.

As a result of this tailored solution, GRIN successfully launched its business, contributing to environmental consciousness and sustainability in urban settings. The funding not only helped in setting up the company but also empowered Salvatore to promote a lifestyle that integrates green practices into metropolitan life, thereby achieving a unique blend of entrepreneurship and ecological responsibility.
