Full Credential Description

The UK Biobank faced significant challenges in expanding its laboratory capabilities to meet the growing demand for biomedical data in health research. The existing facilities were not equipped to handle the volume of samples required, which limited the speed at which researchers could access critical biological data. To address these issues, the UK Biobank partnered with Bruntwood SciTech to develop a new state-of-the-art lab and innovation hub at Manchester Science Park, named Greenheys. This facility is designed to provide specialized lab and workspace, including CL2 labs, which are essential for advanced scientific research.

The tailored solution involved constructing a 131,000 sq ft facility that incorporates cutting-edge technology, such as a latest-generation robotic freezer capable of storing and retrieving up to 20 million biological samples four times faster than current standards. This innovation is expected to revolutionize the pace of scientific discovery by dramatically increasing the speed at which UK Biobank can supply samples to researchers and allowing for the storage of millions more samples as the organization expands. Additionally, the development prioritizes sustainability, aiming for net zero in construction and operation, and includes energy-efficient features like air source heat pumps and solar panels.

Quantifiable results from this initiative include the creation of 23 new employment opportunities and the provision of 340 apprentice weeks, alongside significant community engagement efforts. The project has also contributed over £5,600 to local community initiatives, enhancing the social impact of the development. The new facility is anticipated to accelerate public health discoveries and strengthen links between academia and the commercial sector, ultimately driving innovation in disease prevention and treatment.
