Full Credential Description
The Manchester China Forum (MCF) faced the challenge of enhancing the relationship between Greater Manchester and China amidst a rapidly evolving global landscape. Established in 2013, MCF aimed to position the city-region as a key player in the growing economic ties with China. The Forum recognized the need for a comprehensive approach that encompassed trade, tourism, and cultural exchange, rather than focusing on a single aspect of the relationship.
To address these niche issues, MCF implemented a tailored solution that involved fostering strong political and commercial connections. This included maintaining close relationships with key Chinese cities such as Wuhan and Shenzhen, and facilitating significant investments from Chinese firms, which have exceeded £6 billion in development value. Notable projects include the £1 billion Northern Gateway project and the Airport City development, which involved major equity partnerships with Chinese construction firms.
The results of these efforts have been quantifiable and impactful. MCF's initiatives have not only attracted substantial foreign investment but have also enhanced direct connectivity between Manchester and major Chinese cities through airlines like Cathay Pacific and Hainan Airlines. Additionally, the Manchester China Friendship Programme has successfully engaged over 150 students from the University of Manchester, promoting cultural integration and understanding. The recognition of MCF's successes at various awards, including the Greater China Award by the UK Department of International Trade, underscores the effectiveness of its strategies in strengthening UK-China relations and positioning Greater Manchester as an attractive destination for Chinese investment and collaboration.
