Greater Manchester is embarking on an innovative project to install 2,000 small wind turbines in collaboration with renewable energy manufacturer Alpha 311. These turbines are uniquely designed to harness the wind generated by passing vehicles and can be mounted on buildings and lampposts, making them suitable for urban environments. This initiative aims to create clean, locally generated energy, contributing to Greater Manchester's net-zero targets while also fostering green skills in the region.

The partnership, which includes the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), the Energy Innovation Agency, and the Manchester Inward Investment Agency (MIDAS), is expected to generate more affordable energy for residents, particularly during challenging economic times. The project is projected to create 200 new jobs focused on developing green skills within the local workforce.

Alpha 311's CEO, Barry Thompson, expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the potential benefits for local communities and businesses. The collaboration is also seen as a significant step towards achieving Greater Manchester's 2038 carbon-neutral target, with the Energy Innovation Agency emphasizing the importance of local solutions in generating clean energy. The pilot phase of the project is set to take place in Telford, where the turbines will power street lights and any excess energy will be redirected to the National Grid.
