Full Credential Description
In 2021, the Manchester China Institute, in collaboration with the Manchester China Forum (MCF) and the University of Manchesters International Office, launched the Manchester China Friendship Programme (MCFP) to address the challenges faced by new Chinese students in integrating into campus life. With over 9,000 Chinese students studying in Manchester, the initiative aimed to foster cross-cultural understanding and create a welcoming environment for these students. The program pairs Chinese students with local Manchester students who act as hosts, facilitating friendships and enhancing the overall campus experience.
The MCFP not only focuses on social integration but also provides practical support in areas such as employability, helping Chinese students navigate life in a new city. The program has seen significant growth, doubling its participation from the previous year to include 105 students. Events organized under the MCFP, such as Chinese New Year celebrations, concerts, and guided city tours, have successfully engaged over 100 participants from more than 15 nationalities, enriching the cultural tapestry of the university community.
Feedback from participants highlights the positive impact of the program, with students expressing satisfaction in forming new friendships and participating in cultural exchanges. The initiative has proven to be a vital resource for enhancing the integration of international students, making Manchester a more inclusive and vibrant place for all.
