Bio Regional
Full Credential Description
Burlodge, a key supplier of meal delivery solutions to the NHS, faced a significant challenge due to new NHS England legislation requiring all suppliers to develop a Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) and a Net-Zero Commitment to maintain their supplier status beyond 2024. To address this, Bioregional assisted Burlodge in creating a comprehensive, science-based net-zero reduction plan that successfully met the NHS Evergreen Assessment requirements, achieving Level 2 compliance.
The process began with Bioregional producing a detailed carbon footprint for Burlodge, encompassing scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. This foundational work was critical in developing a tailored carbon reduction plan that aligned with NHS supplier requirements. The plan included a commitment to achieving net zero by 2050 for UK operations, establishing baseline and current emissions in accordance with the GHG protocol, and ensuring emissions were reported in CO2e for all seven greenhouse gases outlined by the Kyoto Protocol. Bioregional also set science-based targets to ensure Burlodge's goals were aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The impact of this collaboration extended beyond mere compliance. Burlodge now possesses a clear, actionable glidepath for carbon reduction, with specific milestones set for 2030 and 2045. Key areas of focus include reducing energy use of products, decreasing plastic purchases, lowering freight emissions, and transitioning to low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants. Additionally, Burlodge is now equipped to engage major suppliers in their emissions reduction journey, ensuring a collective alignment with net-zero goals. This strategic approach not only secures Burlodge's supplier status with the NHS but also positions the company to implement sustainable practices effectively, maximizing their environmental impact.
