Bio Regional
Full Credential Description
Cundall, a multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy, faced the challenge of enhancing sustainability within its operations and major building projects. In 2012, the firm became the first consultancy to have its One Planet Action Plan endorsed by Bioregional, which set the foundation for its sustainability journey. To address its niche issues, Cundall developed a comprehensive 12-page Sustainability Roadmap based on the ten One Planet Living principles, which was signed by all partners and aimed at improving both environmental and social performance.
Since implementing this roadmap, Cundall has achieved significant quantifiable results. Notably, the Birmingham office has seen a 37% reduction in energy use compared to typical office standards. The firm launched the Cundall Diploma, a unique in-house Sustainable Design Training Programme, to empower staff in sustainable design practices. Additionally, the new London office underwent a Gold standard fit-out, becoming the first building in Europe to achieve WELL certification, which focuses on enhancing employee wellbeing.
Cundall has also made strides in its commitment to biodiversity and sustainable practices across its offices. It has planted native habitats for insects and birds in 57% of its office locations and committed to serving 50% vegetarian lunches at company events. Furthermore, the Australian offices have transitioned to using 100% recycled paper, with plans for a global rollout.
In terms of project outcomes, Cundall has delivered several exemplar sustainable buildings. For instance, the Hong Kong Science Park Phase 3a+b achieved a 44% reduction in potable water consumption against the BEAM Baseline, while the Akzo Nobel Project Fresco in Ashington, UK, resulted in a 35% reduction in CO2 emissions by sourcing 18% of its energy from low and zero carbon sources. The National Grid Car Park in Warwick features the largest green walls in Europe, designed to support local biodiversity and improve air quality.
Through these initiatives, Cundall not only enhances its operational sustainability but also contributes to broader industry knowledge sharing, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable design.
