Greg Ryan, the Sustainability Manager for LandCorp, discussed the challenges and innovations associated with the WGV at White Gum Valley project, which is Western Australia’s first One Planet Community. LandCorp faced the niche issue of needing to demonstrate sustainable development across various sectors, including residential, industrial, and commercial. The organization aimed to challenge conventional resource management practices, particularly concerning energy and water usage.

To address these challenges, LandCorp implemented the One Planet Principles, which provided a structured framework for community engagement and aligned development outcomes with sustainability targets. This approach not only facilitated discussions about development objectives but also made the benefits of sustainable practices more relatable to the community. Key initiatives included the introduction of innovative solar energy and battery storage systems in strata developments, as well as the incorporation of water-sensitive urban design.

The project has yielded quantifiable results, such as the establishment of Gen Y Demonstration Housing featuring shared solar and battery systems, and a community bore for public and private garden irrigation. Additionally, the development of affordable housing for artists and creatives has been a significant outcome, addressing the issue of rising housing costs in the Fremantle area. This initiative is expected to foster a sense of community and place among residents.

LandCorp's collaboration with local government and community stakeholders has been crucial in delivering these initiatives. The project has involved extensive community engagement, including events like a community barbeque to celebrate the completion of new facilities, which has further strengthened local ties and support for the project. Overall, the WGV project exemplifies a successful model of sustainable development that integrates community needs with innovative environmental practices.
