Full Credential Description
The Amble Estate in Perth, Australia, is a pioneering project that addresses the dual challenges of the housing and climate crises through its commitment to affordable and sustainable living. With a bold target of 90% of its homes designated as affordable, the estate is strategically located in an area identified as socio-economically disadvantaged. This medium-density infill housing project will feature 105 house and land self-build sites, 24 apartments, and two parks, developed in collaboration with Yolk Property Group, the Department of Communities of the Western Australian Government, and Ventura Home Group.
To tackle the housing crisis, The Amble Estate offers a diverse mix of housing types, including social housing and shared equity options. Homebuyers can choose to work with Ventura Home Group to build a low-cost, energy-efficient 'growable' home, which starts as a two-bedroom unit with the potential for expansion. This innovative approach not only provides affordable housing but also promotes higher-quality living through features such as free solar energy installation, which offers a 40% discount on electricity for ten years, after which the system becomes the homeowner's property.
The project emphasizes sustainable living by encouraging residents to utilize public transport and providing amenities within walking and cycling distance. New pedestrian and cycling infrastructure will enhance connectivity to central Perth, while community spaces, including parks and gardens, will foster a sense of community and promote local food production. The homes are designed with high insulation levels and sustainable building materials, ensuring energy efficiency and comfort.
In addition to providing affordable housing, The Amble Estate aims to cultivate a culture of sustainability among residents and builders. This includes sustainability design guidelines, a resident handbook, and ongoing community engagement initiatives. An onsite demonstration house will showcase sustainable building practices, such as low-carbon timber construction and phase change materials, aiming to shift industry norms and increase the adoption of sustainable building methods.
The project also focuses on equity and local economic development by increasing access for low and very low-income earners through various affordable housing initiatives. Furthermore, homeowners are offered the opportunity to participate in a program that will deliver nearly 100% renewable energy at no cost. The estate will enhance local biodiversity by increasing tree canopy and native vegetation, providing fruiting trees, and establishing community garden spaces. Overall, The Amble Estate exemplifies a comprehensive approach to sustainable living, addressing critical social and environmental challenges while fostering a vibrant community.
