Brighton and Hove City Council faced the challenge of maintaining its status as a thriving seaside resort while ensuring equitable access to resources for its 280,000 residents. The One Planet Action Plan was developed to address these niche issues, aiming to boost the local economy, enhance resilience against rising energy, fuel, and food prices, and promote a healthier, more equal city—all while protecting the environment.

The tailored solution involved a comprehensive three-year plan that outlined specific baselines, high-level objectives, and actionable steps to improve local quality of life and reduce environmental impacts. Key initiatives included the adoption of local renewable energy sources and insulation programs, which not only saved energy but also reduced heating costs for residents. The plan was structured around Bioregional’s ten One Planet Living principles, with clear objectives set for both the council and the wider community.

Quantifiable results from the implementation of the One Planet Action Plan included a significant increase in the proportion of Council staff reporting good health, rising from 62% to 86%. Additionally, 132 local businesses joined the Living Wage campaign, promoting fair pay across the city. The initiative also led to the establishment of 30 community composting schemes, successfully diverting 84 tonnes of food waste from landfills each year. Furthermore, Brighton and Hove achieved UNESCO Biosphere status, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
