Ian Pritchett, Managing Director of Greencore Construction, has transitioned from a climate change skeptic to a leader in sustainable home building. His company, based in Oxfordshire, has developed two communities—Kings Farm Close and Springfield Meadows—that have received One Planet Living® leadership recognition. The primary challenge faced by Greencore was the construction industry's inertia towards adopting sustainable practices, which has historically resisted change despite the pressing need for zero carbon emissions by 2050.

To address these challenges, Greencore Construction has focused on integrating traditional building materials and methods, which are inherently sustainable, into new builds. Pritchett's experience with historic buildings and ecological building practices led to the establishment of Greencore in 2013, where the company manages the entire process from land acquisition to construction. This holistic approach not only emphasizes sustainability but also aims to create communities that prioritize health and well-being.

The results of Greencore's efforts are notable. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the company experienced a significant increase in interest from potential buyers, who were drawn to the sustainable features of their properties. This shift indicates a growing market demand for sustainable living options, suggesting that while immediate profits may not be higher, the long-term resilience and appeal of sustainable homes are becoming increasingly recognized. Pritchett advocates for a systemic change in planning regulations to favor high sustainability aspirations, which could further incentivize developers to adopt eco-friendly practices.
