Bio Regional
Full Credential Description
Pizza Hut Restaurants (PHR), one of the world's largest pizza chains, faced the challenge of achieving its ambitious goal of becoming net zero carbon by 2030. Despite having a longstanding commitment to sustainability, focusing on areas such as food waste and energy management, PHR needed a comprehensive analysis of its carbon emissions to identify key areas for improvement. The company commissioned Bioregional to conduct an in-depth carbon footprint analysis of its entire operations, including scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
The analysis revealed that food and drink accounted for 58% of PHR's total carbon footprint, with cheese alone representing 19%. Additionally, significant emissions were generated from customer and employee travel, an area that posed challenges for direct control but presented opportunities for promoting lower-impact transportation options. The complexity of deliveries, particularly through aggregators like Deliveroo and Uber Eats, required Bioregional to make estimates based on available data to understand the carbon impact of these operations.
As a result of this detailed carbon footprint analysis, PHR gained critical insights into its sustainability impacts. The company is now equipped with the data necessary to prioritize its sustainability efforts effectively. It has initiated collaborations with its largest suppliers and dairy farmers to enhance sustainable practices and is exploring ways to encourage more eco-friendly travel options for employees and customers. This strategic approach not only aids in monitoring greenhouse gas emissions over time but also supports PHR in communicating its sustainability initiatives to employees, customers, and suppliers, fostering greater awareness and collaboration towards achieving its net-zero carbon target by 2030.
