Full Credential Description

In collaboration with Skanska Finland and the Finnish Innovation Fund, Sitra, a comprehensive sustainable masterplanning initiative was undertaken for two new city districts in Finland, Kivisto (Helsinki) and Kangas (Jyväskylä), aimed at accommodating 15,000 residents. The project, which spanned from 2014 to 2015, focused on implementing the One Planet Living framework to create near zero-carbon urban environments.

The challenges faced included the need for sustainable living solutions that would benefit both residents and municipalities. To address these, user-scenario modeling was employed to understand the daily lives of potential residents, which informed the development of site-specific action plans. These plans outlined how to achieve One Planet Living goals through innovative strategies. The designs incorporated highly energy-efficient buildings powered by renewable energy sources, including solar PV and waste heat from commercial refrigeration. Additional proposals included cycling ring roads and centralized waste collection systems to facilitate sustainable living.

The anticipated outcomes of the Kivisto and Kangas developments are significant. Upon completion in 2025, the projects are expected to create 2,100 jobs and provide 8,000 new office and retail positions. Furthermore, 47% of journeys within these districts are projected to be made by foot or bicycle, and 90% of the energy used will come from renewable sources. This initiative not only aims to enhance the ecological footprint of the areas but also to foster local economies and support the establishment of vibrant city centers for services, employment, and housing.
