Bio Regional
Full Credential Description
Bioregional, as the secretariat for UKSSD, faced the challenge of coordinating a diverse group of over 100 organizations to effectively implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the UK. The primary issue was the need for a cohesive strategy to inspire and mobilize various stakeholders towards a common goal of transforming the UK into a sustainable society.
To address this, Bioregional facilitated the establishment of UKSSD, a multi-stakeholder network aimed at driving action on the SDGs. This involved coordinating significant initiatives, such as an open letter to the Prime Minister, which garnered support from 84 UK brands, urging government collaboration to achieve the SDGs. Additionally, Bioregional led the production of the "Measuring up" report, the most comprehensive assessment of the UK's performance on the SDGs to date. This report highlighted that out of 143 relevant targets, only 24% were performing well, while 57% showed gaps in policy coverage or inadequate performance, and 15% had little or no policy in place.
The tailored solution provided by Bioregional included leveraging their expertise in Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) to contribute to the Goal 12 chapter of the report. This strategic involvement not only informed stakeholders about the current state of the SDGs in the UK but also identified critical areas for improvement, thereby influencing policy and advocacy efforts.
As a result of these initiatives, UKSSD has positioned itself as a pivotal player in the UK’s sustainability landscape, fostering collaboration among diverse organizations and driving awareness of the SDGs. The measurable impact of these efforts is reflected in the increased engagement of stakeholders and the establishment of a framework for ongoing assessment and action towards achieving the SDGs in the UK.
