Springfield Meadows, developed by Greencore Homes, is a pioneering custom-build housing development located on the outskirts of Southmoor, Oxfordshire. The project faced the challenge of creating a sustainable community that not only meets housing needs but also promotes a healthy lifestyle and environmental responsibility. To address these niche issues, Greencore Homes implemented the One Planet Living framework throughout the design, planning, and construction phases, resulting in a development that has been recognized as a Global Leader in One Planet Living by Bioregional.

The tailored solution involved constructing 16 custom-build plots, including 9 affordable homes, all designed to high standards of energy efficiency and sustainability. The innovative construction system utilized natural materials, such as hemp, which led to an impressive 90% reduction in carbon emissions during construction compared to standard homes in the UK. This approach resulted in a total savings of approximately 250 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions across the site, equivalent to removing 50 cars from the road for a year. Furthermore, all homes are designed to be zero carbon in operation, equipped with solar panels and connected to green power for any surplus energy needs.

The development also fosters a strong sense of community and connection with nature. Residents benefit from large gardens for growing food, a central green space, a wildlife pond, a community orchard, and a herb garden. To promote sustainable transportation, the site offers excellent bus connections and a car club featuring electric vehicles, along with free bus vouchers for the first year of residency. Greencore Homes aims to cultivate a sustainable sharing culture and strengthen community bonds through these initiatives. Additionally, a management company will be established to incorporate the One Planet Living action plan, which will eventually be handed over to residents, enhancing their sense of ownership and responsibility within the community.
