Bio Regional
Full Credential Description
In 2018, Oxfordshire participated in Bioregional’s One Planet Cities pilot project, which aimed to create a collaborative vision for a sustainable future. This initiative involved local authorities, businesses, community groups, and citizens, culminating in a published vision in 2019. The One Planet Oxfordshire initiative now encourages these organizations to develop their own sustainability action plans based on Bioregional’s One Planet Living® framework, which consists of ten principles addressing various aspects of sustainability, including health, happiness, and zero carbon energy.
Oxfordshire County Council has been a key player in this initiative, committing to carbon neutrality across its estate by 2030 through its Climate Action Declaration. This commitment aligns with the goals of the One Planet Oxfordshire initiative, demonstrating a top-down approach to sustainability. Additionally, South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils are also utilizing the One Planet Living framework to tackle the climate emergency, with ambitious targets of carbon neutrality by 2030 and 2045, respectively.
Community engagement is exemplified by the Rose Hill and Iffley Low Carbon group, which aims to create the first zero-carbon neighborhood in the UK. This group, comprising local volunteers known as the 'Rose Hill Warriors,' has undertaken various projects, including installing solar panels and organizing tree planting initiatives, all aimed at fostering a sustainable and equitable community.
In the realm of social enterprise, Aspire, an employment charity, has developed its own One Planet Action Plan. The organization focuses on empowering individuals facing homelessness and poverty to find sustainable employment. Their collaboration with Bioregional aims to make the sustainability agenda more inclusive in Oxfordshire. Furthermore, Oxfordshire Greentech, a business network for low-carbon growth, has expanded since its inception in 2019, now boasting over 100 members. This network supports businesses in transitioning to a low-carbon future through events, advice, and training. Notably, OXWASH, a member of this network, has innovated a sustainable laundry service that utilizes advanced washing technology and electric bike deliveries, positioning itself as a leader in sustainable business practices in the region.
These initiatives collectively illustrate the commitment of Oxfordshire’s organizations and communities to achieving a sustainable future, showcasing a range of tailored solutions and quantifiable goals that contribute to the overarching One Planet vision.
