Full Credential Description

Paul Roberts, CEO of Aspire, an Oxford-based employment charity and social enterprise, faced significant challenges in enhancing sustainability within the organization while supporting vulnerable adults and young people facing homelessness and poverty. The need for a practical and accessible sustainability framework led Aspire to adopt the One Planet Living framework through Bioregional’s One Planet Oxfordshire Initiative. This framework resonated with Aspire's philosophy and provided a straightforward approach to engage both staff and the community in sustainability efforts.

To implement this framework, Aspire developed a One Planet Action Plan, which was facilitated by training sessions conducted by Bioregional. These sessions not only engaged staff but also inspired trustees and a broader team to contribute creatively to sustainability initiatives. The overwhelming response from colleagues indicated a strong desire to take action on sustainability, fostering a sense of pride and responsibility within the organization. The establishment of a working group, including both trustees and staff, was a crucial step in ensuring progress on the action plan throughout 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed additional challenges, disrupting Aspire's operations but also providing an opportunity to reflect on and embed sustainability into their practices. The organization quickly adapted by shifting to digital platforms to continue supporting vulnerable individuals, particularly those in precarious housing situations. They recognized a growing need for digital connectivity among these populations and planned to address the anticipated rise in homelessness and unemployment post-pandemic. This situation prompted Aspire to consider investing in sustainable practices, such as reducing commuting and exploring partnerships with local green businesses to create job opportunities in the green economy.

Looking ahead, Aspire aims to champion sustainability within the voluntary and community sectors, addressing resource challenges while sharing their experiences and resources to inspire others. Roberts emphasized the importance of collaboration between environmental and social justice movements to achieve meaningful change in communities. The adoption of the One Planet Living framework has not only provided a structured approach to sustainability for Aspire but has also positioned them as a leader in promoting inclusive sustainability practices across Oxfordshire.
