DaVita Inc. faced significant challenges in training their dialysis technicians, particularly in providing effective hands-on experience without compromising patient care. The traditional training methods required substantial time away from patient interaction for both new technicians and their preceptors, which strained resources in a clinical setting. To address this issue, DaVita partnered with Accenture to develop a virtual training program utilizing the metaverse, allowing technicians to familiarize themselves with dialysis equipment in a simulated environment before working with real patients.
The tailored solution involved creating an immersive virtual learning experience that focused on the complex process of setting up dialysis machines, known as "stringing," which consists of 47 unique steps. This process is intricate and requires precise execution to ensure patient safety. Accenture's team, comprising designers, UX experts, and metaverse specialists, collaborated with DaVita's clinical experts to break down each step and develop a hyper-realistic virtual model of the dialysis apparatus. This model was designed to be used with virtual reality (VR) headsets, enabling trainees to practice the necessary movements in a realistic setting, thereby enhancing their confidence and competence.
The results of this innovative training approach were significant. Within just 12 weeks, DaVita was able to implement a virtual training program that not only preserved valuable clinical resources but also improved the overall training experience for technicians. The immersive nature of the training allowed for repeated practice without the constraints of a physical environment, leading to better preparedness for real-life scenarios. Additionally, the virtual training program has the potential to identify process improvements and enhance operational efficiency, providing long-term benefits beyond immediate training needs. This initiative positions DaVita at the forefront of utilizing virtual training solutions in healthcare, with implications for broader applications across various industries focused on safety and technical skill development.
