Full Credential Description

A major US health care provider faced significant challenges in managing its supply chain due to divergent data management practices across its extensive network of over 30 hospitals and numerous medical centers. The organization, which serves millions of members nationwide, required a dependable and resilient supply chain to ensure timely delivery of critical medical items. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these issues, prompting the organization to establish a “war room” to monitor inventory levels closely, which highlighted the urgent need for improved data accuracy and visibility. To address these challenges, the health care organization sought a digital transformation focused on data automation, simplification, and standardization. They recognized the necessity of a unified dashboard to streamline metrics and enhance decision-making across their operations. Ernst & Young LLP (EY) was engaged to facilitate this transformation, and within two months, they identified existing metrics and initiated discussions to create a cohesive reporting framework. This effort aimed to provide leadership with better insights for supply chain forecasting and inventory planning. EY conducted three workshops that brought together stakeholders from various regions and supply chain operations. These sessions generated over 100 ideas for translating the organization’s supply chain vision into actionable metrics. The workshops revealed a lack of data standardization, with the organization tracking 375 metrics across 130 dashboards and utilizing 15 different technology systems. This complexity hindered effective benchmarking and decision-making. As a result of the collaborative efforts, the number of metrics was reduced to 25 key indicators, and the disparate dashboards were consolidated into a single, standardized dashboard. The implementation of this new data management system yielded significant results. The health care organization now benefits from streamlined operations, allowing executives to make faster, more informed decisions regarding inventory and scheduling. The consolidation of technology platforms into one cohesive system has improved data reliability and accessibility, ultimately enhancing the organization’s ability to serve its patients effectively. Monthly follow-ups with leadership ensured that the new metrics were being utilized appropriately, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and adaptation within the organization. By investing in a robust data management process, the health care provider is better positioned to deliver high-quality care across its network of hospitals.
